Research Opportunity - Young Adult Tobacco Purchase Survey

The California Youth Advocacy Network (CYAN), in partnership with researchers from the University of California, Davis, are conducting a research study to assess young adult student access to tobacco products on California colleges and universities. Student researchers, ages 21 - 26, are being recruited to conduct tobacco purchase surveys at UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC Santa Barbara, University of Southern California, and San Diego State University. Four students per university are being recruited for this project.

Key project activities

Students will have an opportunity to receive training and participate in research activities with academic and community partners. Core activities include:

  • Complete training on research project, activity, and survey protocol.

  • Using a phone-based app or website, conduct two successful purchases of tobacco products on campus or in student housing.

  • Complete an electronic survey after each purchase.

student researcher responsibilities

Commit to completing two app-based tobacco purchases on campus between April 22 - May 2, 2024.

UCSB students will complete four purchases.

Complete an online training detailing the research project and survey protocol prior to making a purchase.

Communicate with research team, when appropriate, about training and purchase experience.

Deliver purchased products to on campus partner following delivery of tobacco.

compensation

Students will receive $150 for taking the online training, conducting two successful tobacco purchases, completing the electronic survey after each purchase, and delivering tobacco products to the campus partner.

UCSB students will receive $250 for four purchases.

Students will be given a Visa gift card to purchase the products, pay for taxes, and delivery fees.

Requirements

Students must be currently enrolled at the university where the purchase survey will be conducted.

Applicants must be 21 - 26 years old and have a valid, government-issued ID (such as a driver’s license or passport).

Students will need to share their name, contact information, and government ID with the retailer in order to legally purchase tobacco products.
