Youth Board of Directors
CYAN’s Youth Board of Directors is a dynamic group of high school students from across California who provide direction and guidance to CYAN’s Youth Program. Youth serve a one-year term (July – June) on the Board and meet monthly to discuss CYAN’s youth-focused activities.

CYAN is recruiting high school-age youth to serve on the 2019-2020 Youth Board of Directors. Members will have the opportunity to develop leadership, public speaking, and communication skills, and will use those skills to educate decision makers and peers on creating tobacco-free communities.

What is CYAN's Youth Board of Directors?
CYAN's Youth Board of Directors (YBOD) is made up of 6-10 high school aged youth from across the state who are interested in working closely with CYAN staff to empower teens to advocate for a tobacco-free California.
What does the YBOD do?
Empowers teens to advocate for tobacco-free policy.
Works closely with CYAN staff to provide direction for California's youth tobacco control materials, activities, trainings, and events.
May represent CYAN and/or facilitate workshops at conferences and events.
What will youth get from this experience?
Develop leadership, public speaking, and communication skills.
Have opportunities to use new skills to educate decision makers and peers across the state on creating tobacco-free communities.
Increase knowledge of current tobacco issues.
Have fun working with other teen advocates from around the state.
Increase experience for resume/college applications.
What is the commitment to serve on the Board?
Attend online video meetings 1-2 times/month
Attend 2-3 in-person weekend YBOD meetings, summer leadership training, Youth Quest and the Statewide Youth Advocacy Conference in Sacramento and surrounding areas (all expenses paid by CYAN).
Help plan statewide activities, campaigns, trainings, and events.
Stay in regular communication with CYAN staff and other YBOD members via email, phone, and internet.
Applicants must be:
Actively involved in local tobacco control/prevention activities.
Able to commit time to work, meetings, and travel associated with serving on board
Entering the 10th-12th grades during the 2019-2020 school year
Able to serve a one-year term (July 1, 2019 - June 30, 2020)
Able to respond to email and text communication on a regular basis
Hard-working, enthusiastic, team players
Confident in sharing their ideas and a willingness to speak up
Committed to fighting the tobacco industry and spreading the truth about tobacco
Willing and able to travel to in-person YBOD meetings, trainings, and conferences in Sacramento and surrounding areas.
